gardening inside

How many sunny days to you get living in Portland, Oregon? Not very many. I find myself itching to get out and do some gardening about February thus I have taken up the hobby of gardening inside. I've taken my dining room table and added a beautiful variety of succulents from Pistils Nursery on Mississippi and combined it with vintage store finds and new items that make me happy. I love coming home and seeing my clean table with all of my favorite things on it. It brings a smile to my face and is incredibly easy and inexpensive to do. Try it.

seedlings

Before I start writing, I wanted to let you know that Tilly, the Americauna passed last night while I was at work. I found her and my heart broke. She will be missed.

It was only 10 days ago that I purchased 1 inch peat pots and started planting seeds and they are sprouted and growing! I've purchased starts the previous last couple of years but this year along with the chicks, I wanted the challenge of really getting into things. I started organic heirloom seedlings indoors on my dining room table and I can't wait to plant them in my new boxes that my husband is building. We have an unusually large driveway in North Portland and are in the process of converting it into an urban farm. Let's just hope it works! I'll keep you posted with the progress of both the garden and the chicks daily.

meet poppy!

Poppy is our newest addition to our chick family! We couldn't stand only having two so we went over to Naomi's Organic Farm Supply and picked her up! She is a Brahma and I'm sure she will grow into a very pretty lady.
Poppy has already picked up some new tricks from her older sisters. Last night while putting the chicks into their new mansion (really large box) I was pushing some of the shavings around to make the ground more even for their little feet. They thought it looked like an excellent game to play and started scratching! Before I knew it, both Tilly and Simi had started pecking at the box. They were engaged in this new found activity for about an hour. It was so much fun to watch! Poppy started in first thing when she was introduced to her new home. I think she'll be a good match.

baby chicks!

There is probably nothing cuter on earth than brand new baby chicks. My husband and I brought home two adorable chicks on Saturday. They are wonderful! I've never had chickens and was not really sure what to expect but we are learning. Last night after waking up every other hour to make sure the temperature in their box was ok, I am exhausted! Who would have thought that these cute little things could make you worry so much. They eat. They poo. They eat. They poo. They drink water. They poo. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with Tilly and Simi.
